Job Description
The incumbent is responsible for accessioning, testing, interpreting and reporting all results and post-production processing. The incumbent performs these duties in accordance with Canadian Blood Services Standard Operating Procedures, Centre Operating Procedures and manufacturer’s instructions.
- Perform testing procedures.
- Accession patient samples for testing.
- Distribute blood components for transportation to the hospitals and determine if returned components will be accepted into inventory for re-distribution.
- Receive and prepare reagents or reagent kits for testing.
- Prepare laboratory equipment for routine operation.
- The job requirements may, on occasion, involve assisting with training of staff, student technologists and other Health Care professionals as required.
Required Skills
- Graduate of an approved Medical Laboratory Technology training program with attained certification or eligibility for certification by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is required.
- Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba is required.
- A minimum of one year experience in a Transfusion Medicine related laboratory is preferred.
- General knowledge of hospital and various laboratory policies and procedures, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), is preferred.
- Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships with departmental staff, management, volunteers, customers, and the general public.
- Competency in the use of Laboratory software.
- Competency in the use of personal computers within a Windows operating system using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Lotus Notes software.
- Recognized interest for continuous learning.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, being able to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities within short time lines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a good command of the English language.
- Displays telephone etiquette and maintains high professional standards ensuring an internal or external customer first approach is positive.
- Demonstrates good listening skills in order to enable effective and satisfactory resolution of problems.
- Actively promotes the importance of team cohesiveness, pride and accomplishment in the delivery of a superior level of service.
- Ability to follow instructions, document work and assume responsibility for own work

Additional Information
The hours of work for this temporary part-time position are 45 hours in a bi-weekly period. The end date for this position is 2012-03-31. All hours are flexible as assigned and can include shift work.
