WORKFACE PLANNER
Reports to: Area Superintendent
Role Definition: Reporting to the Area Superintendent, the Work-Face Planner is responsible for the “field level planning” of the project scope. Safety, Quality, Cost and Time Management Planning are key areas for which the Work-Face Planner is responsible. The Work-Face planner is responsible in whole for the compilation of complete, accurate “planning packages”.
Key Responsibilities
Ø General
§ Satisfy the Client by means of understanding the project’s key success factors and meeting the necessary milestones within the area of influence. (I.e. planning packages compiled in a timely manner and in alignment with the schedule.)
§ Thoroughly understand Client’s contractual obligations for the specific area of responsibility.
§ Build and maintain a trusting relationship with the Client, Subcontractors and Suppliers.
§ Engage fully in a lessons learned - continuous improvement process.
Ø Safety Management
§ Expected to promote a positive safety culture with a target for zero accidents.
§ Have respect for workers.
§ Shared responsibility (with Superintendent) for Planning Safety into the work packages.
§ Perform planning of the work in accordance with applicable regulations, Client’s HSE program, and Client’s HSE programs.
Ø Scope Management
§ Possess a thorough, detailed knowledge on the scope of work within the responsible area.
§ Directly responsible for the compilation of clear, accurate scope packages inclusive detailed analysis of Scope, Schedule, Materials/Equipment, Labour skills, Budgeted Man-hours, and Safety aspects.
§ Expected to mentor (where required) the foreman for successful execution.
Ø Time Management
§ Responsible to liaise with the Scheduler while compiling the work packages to ensure alignment with milestones.
§ Provide input as to time component of the work package and assess/mitigate schedule discrepancies.
Ø Cost Management
§ General understanding of the Cost Structure for the specific area of the Project (estimate basis, budget breakdown, Client’s Cost Management procedures).
§ Liaise with the Cost group when compiling the work packages in effort to relate the manhours/materials to a total cost for the work package.
Ø Quality Management
§ Support the management team in “assuring” the client of Quality by providing the highest quality service.
§ Compile work packages in compliance with the applicable regulations, Client’s QMP, and Client’s Quality Program.
§ Lead the initiative to plan “quality-in”.
Ø Human Resource Management
§ Mentor the foreman where necessary.
§ Participate in a team approach with the foreman to ensure that planning and execution are meshed.
Ø Communications Management
§ Utilize effective, professional, communications methods.
§ Participate in project meetings with clear and timely input with respect to status, risks, etc to work packages.
Ø Risk Management
§ Participate in risk management reviews on the project from a detailed planning perspective within a specific area.
§ Provide input to a risk log illustrating risk identification, priority, impact, and mitigate actions. The continual review of this log is an agenda item for progress meetings.
§ Communicate Risk “early”.
Ø Procurement Management
§ Work closely with the procurement team to obtain accurate material receipt details required for accurate Work Face Planning.
Key Relationship: Client, Client Senior Management, Subcontractors and Suppliers.
Supervisory: Mentorship and training for Foreman and Field Coordinators.
Technical Skills:
• 10-15 years of construction experience and demonstrated ability (and proven track record) to plan work accurately and timely.
• Prove the ability to understand the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning phases.
• Excellent Communications skills (written and oral) are essential.
• The ability to “work with others” is of utmost importance due to the multi-company alliances that are present.
Education Requirements: Trade Certification, Technical Diploma and applicable related experience
