Electrical - Computer Engineer (Telecommunication Design)
For our client a Alberta based electricity provider, we are currently looking for a Telecommunication Design Engineer to join their. The successful candidate will work with internal & external technical staff to ensure that Telecommunications are appropriately integrated into capital projects. As such, this individual will provide technical leadership at all critical project phases – from budgeting, planning, implementation, through to final acceptance.
This position will appeal to individuals with Telecommunications, Networking, Remote Supervisory and Distributed Control skills who are looking for a the opportunity to develop their engineering and leadership talents in a dynamic utility environment during a period of large growth. This is a full-time position based out of the Calgary office, reporting to the Manager of Integrated Engineering. Technical support for this position will be provided by the groups Senior Telecomm Engineer.
Responsibilities
• Design of Telecommunication facilities for capital projects
• Provide timely and effective telecommunication technical input to support project scoping, estimating and project execution. This will include creating project scope descriptions that provide sufficient detail to allow accurate estimating and clear direction to an external engineering and construction contractor
• Coordinate and obtain necessary approvals for telecommunications projects
• Review technical drawings & specifications submitted by contractors to ensure each project meets acceptable standards for operability, functionality, maintainability, reliability, durability and safety
• Stamp and sign engineered drawings as required
• Obtain, manage and maintain effective working relationships with suppliers, external technical and construction resources, and internal clients that result in growing understanding, good decisions and effective cooperation
• Manage cost, quality, schedule, and safety for multiple telecom projects as required
• Report project status, finances, and schedule status to internal customers, stakeholders, and senior management
• Maintain competency with current industry standards and regulatory groups such as CSA, IEC, IEEE, Industry Canada, AESO, WECC, and NERC
Qualifications
• Qualifies for registration as a Professional Engineer or Registered Professional Technologist (RPT) with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA)
• Minimum 4 years of telecommunication and/or SCADA experience
• Prior experience with Alcatel-Lucent IP/MPLS technology and 5620-SAM network management tools would be an asset
• Strong English communication skills with ability to work in a team environment, positively influence others, and develop strong internal and external relationships
• Demonstrated strong analytical, risk assessment and problem solving skills
• Strong written, reporting, graphical and oral presentation skills
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple competing priorities
Experience with (or at least a technical understanding of), the following:
• Microwave and VHF/UHF radio path planning and design
• Digital multiplexing technology
• Wide-Area Ethernet networks
• Technical understanding of IP/MPLS, ATM, SONET, CWDM/DWDM, DS0, T1, OC3, Frame Relay and terminal servers
Preference will be given to individuals with knowledge & experience with the following:
• Radio Path Studies using Pathloss
• Frequency and Radio Tower applications to Industry Canada and Transport Canada
• Microwave Radios (Aviat Eclipse, ALU 9500 MPR, and Motorola PTP), VHF/UHF Radios (4RF Aprisa and MDSX790/710) and Mobile Radio (Motorola Quantar)
• Fiber Link Budget, ALU 1830 DWDM and OPGW/ADSS Installation
• ALU hardware (MPLS: 7750/7705, ATM: 7470/7270, TDM: 3600, Switches and Routers: 512/6850/6855 and Network Manager: 5620)
• SCADA hardware (GE D2X RTU, Cybectec and SEL Data Concentrators) and DNP3.0
• Substation LAN (Ruggedcom RSG2100 and RS416)
• Teleprotection and its equipment (SEL, Siemens and GE relays and its associated protocols: Mirror-bit, G.703, and RS232)
• Various level of telecom circuits interfaces (analog (2W and 4W), RS232, RS485, G.703, T1, OC3, 10/100/1000 BaseT, and GigE and OC3 SFPs)
• Equipment building and its associated equipment such as AC/DC systems, backup generator, and lightning and grounding system
• Knowledge of Projectwise, Bentley Redline and Visio
• Experience issuing drawings for review, construction and as-builts
• Project Management and Construction
