The Facilities Maintenance Technician – Diesel Mechanic (FMT-DM) is responsible for monitoring, maintaining and troubleshooting the serviceability of the facilities, the power generation and electrical distribution systems (along with the related equipment) at the NWS Short and Long Range Radar sites within the zone. Also, the FMT-DM is responsible for ensuring that associated administrative requirements are completed in accordance with standard operating procedures. Specifically, the FMT provides diagnostic, problem solving and repair capabilities in servicing of static and mobile electronics equipment; and, documents, reports and maintains facilities files as related to the NWS work management system, operational field reports, data analysis, etc.
This position works 5 days per week and may be a Community-Based position (for those living in the community) or an 8x4 Rotational position (8 weeks on-site and 4 weeks on leave). Work is normally carried out in remote Arctic locations with exposure to severe outdoor winter weather conditions; and, this position requires frequent travel by helicopter to/from remote radar sites.
Qualifications
• A licensed journeyman and post journeyman experience in one of the following or related trades: Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanic, Truck & Coach Technician, Automotive Technician
• Minimum 2 years’ proven experience in major/minor diesel engine overhauls
• Must be familiar with programmable logic controllers
• Solid communication and computer skills (MS Word and Excel)
• Hands-on mechanical experience with Lister HL6 and Caterpillar 3400 series engines would be an asset
• Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of the position, previous electronic/electrical/industrial mechanical maintenance experience (preferably in power plant operation) would be an asset
• Ability to integrate successfully into a small, multi-cultural and team-oriented department
• Ability to work under physically demanding, often adverse conditions in isolated Arctic locations
We offer a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package. Community-Based staff are eligible for trip entitlement and northern location allowance. Rotational staff will be flown to/from the work location; site facilities include full meals, exercise room, internet and recreational resources.
This position is covered under the provision of the collective agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W.) Local 1541. Candidates must be Canadian citizens, be eligible for SECRET Security Clearance, possess a valid driver’s license and pass a pre-employment medical.
